• This new initiative benefits about 200 low-income families with a year’s worth of fresh produce

Singapore, 23 September 2021 – NTUC FairPrice (FairPrice) today announced the launch of the Food for Good Community Fridge @ Marine Terrace, in collaboration with Marine Terrace Breeze Residents’ Committee, Marine Parade. The initiative will conduct food distributions via community fridges to provide free food to residents in the area.

To kick-start the initiative, FairPrice Foundation sponsored two brand new chillers and will also be providing a year’s worth of fresh and nutritious produce such as fruits, vegetables, milk and meat, worth an estimated $100,000. The products will be supplied every week from the FairPrice stores located around the area.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, Group CEO of FairPrice Group, said, “The pandemic has brought about financial challenges that have impacted many lower-income households, affecting their ability to purchase food and groceries. With the Food for Good Community Fridge initiative, FairPrice hopes the weekly food distributions will provide some relief for them and at the same time, foster the spirit of giving and sharing within our communities.”

Providing for Needy Communities & Reducing Food Waste

This community fridge initiative also complements FairPrice’s Food Waste Reduction initiative, which aims to minimise waste from unsold but still wholesome food. Under this scheme, all of such food from two FairPrice stores in the vicinity will be donated to the community fridges to provide for the less fortunate while also reducing food waste. The two nearby stores include FairPrice Finest @ Katong Village and FairPrice Finest @ Marine Parade.

The launch, held at Blk 20 Marine Terrace, was graced by Dr Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower & Second Minister for Trade and Industry, Adviser to Marine Parade GRC Grassroots Organisation.

To foster greater community bonding and participation, FairPrice partnered with Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH) to beautify the community fridges, including the walls and pillars at Blk 20 Marine Terrace. The art pieces by NYGH’s students and teachers feature colourful illustrations of personified fruits and vegetables, and snippets of people in the community bonding over food. Apart from this, they also serve as directional signs to the community fridges and also offer health tips.

Over the years, FairPrice Foundation has been assisting needy families to moderate the cost of daily essentials. Last year, the Foundation donated S$3 million to the FairPrice Food Voucher Scheme to provide daily essentials to low-income families across Singapore.
