- FairPrice Foundation to bring back popular 50 cents kopi and teh at selected Kopitiams islandwide for two months starting from May – June
- To commemorate May Day, children of NTUC Union members will be given a free milo with every purchase of 50 cents kopi or teh on 1 May
Singapore, 24 April 2024 – National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and FairPrice Group (FPG) today announced that they will double down on its efforts to keep daily essentials affordable for all through savings and discounts worth more than S$4.5 million for all NTUC Union members1 and Link members2 across its supermarkets and selected Kopitiam outlets for May and June.
This commitment is double the $2 million worth of savings committed for May Day in 2023. Vipul Chawla, Group Chief Executive Officer of FPG said that despite stubborn inflation and cost pressures, FPG remains laser focused on its social mission of keeping daily essentials within reach. “FairPrice Group takes its social mission very seriously. This May Day, true to our roots, we are demonstrating this commitment by setting a benchmark for the prices of daily staples, ensuring that they remain affordable and readily available.”
Deals and discounts at all FairPrice supermarket formats including FairPrice Online
Starting from 25 April, for three weeks, a special weekly promotion will be offered every Thursday to Union members to enjoy a 50 per cent discount on selected essential items. The first week’s deal, available from 25 April to 28 April, will feature a 50 per cent discount on one of the most popular types of rice sold at FairPrice – the 5kg Double FP Thai Hom Mali Rice. This popular daily essential will be sold at $6.95 (50 per cent discount from $13.90). Subsequent May Day deals will be announced closer to the launch dates of 1 May and 9 May 2024.
“With core inflation rising to 3.6 per cent earlier this year and a low-growth economy, our customer data tells us that households are doing all they can to stretch their dollar. To make our customers’ daily lives just a little better, we have put together a blockbuster set of discounts on daily staples from food to non-food to provide savings of more than $4 million over the next few months,” Vipul added.
FPG’s special 50 per cent off May Day discounts on essential items like rice, which are typically not offered at such deep discounts, will take place in addition to existing discounts and programmes to help customers stretch their dollar and mitigate the rising cost of living. For example, FPG has in place programmes to help consumers shop smarter and save more through its “Greater Value Every Day” initiative3.
Ng Chee Meng, Secretary-General of NTUC said, “As we celebrate May Day, through social enterprises like FairPrice Group, NTUC helps Singaporeans stretch their dollar by offering deals like 50 per cent off daily essentials and 50 cents coffee or tea with free Milo during this special day. NTUC cares for our members, and we hope that these measures will go some way in helping the Singaporean worker manage their family’s day-to-day expenses.”
FPG has given back over S$900 million
Since FPG was formed in 2019, the group has returned more than S$900 million in discounts, rebates, and donations to members, customers, and the community.
In 2023, evergreen value programmes for all walks of life have provided savings of up to S$15.2 million and that will continue into 2024 with the following discounts:
- Monday and Wednesday – Pioneer Generation (PG) – 3 per cent off
- Tuesday – Seniors aged 60 years old and above – 2 per cent off
