  • To improve Singaporeans’ access to their most popular and affordable source of protein, FairPrice Group will sell a tray of 30 Pasar Fresh Eggs at a promotional price of $6.20 from 20 – 26 June

SINGAPORE, 20 JUNE 2024 – FairPrice Group (FPG) announced today a first-of-its-kind donation of fresh protein directly to the vulnerable in Singapore through its philanthropic arm, FairPrice Foundation (FPF). Through the initiative, FPF and its community partners will distribute 45,000 eggs to underprivileged families, individuals, and migrant workers.

To address the rising cost of daily essentials, FPG will also run a concurrent promotion on eggs. From 20 – 26 June, a tray of 30 Pasar Fresh Eggs across all its supermarket banners – FairPrice, FairPrice Finest, FairPrice Xtra, and FairPrice Online – will be sold at $6.20 instead of its usual price of $6.80 per tray.

These efforts are aimed at improving Singaporeans’ access to a key source of protein – an essential nutrient for the body to repair, build, and grow itself, and key to maintaining a well-balanced diet at any stage of life1. The average Singaporean consumed around 390 eggs in 20212, significantly higher than the average of other major markets, such as the United States, whose per capita consumption was 282 eggs3.

Jean Khong, General Manager, FairPrice Foundation said that even as stubborn inflation continues to impact the prices of daily staples, eggs have been a more accessible and affordable source of protein for the man on the street, especially the poor and needy.

“Our idea of distributing eggs was hatched through our interactions with community groups and ground up feedback from our regular community outreach activities. Many of the underprivileged that we serve have shared that what they want most is fresh protein for their families and loved ones.”

As part of its mission to sustain the poor and needy, FPF will collaborate with Taman Jurong Community Club, Riverlife Community Services, Central Singapore Community Development Council, and NTUC’s Migrant Workers’ Centre to distribute the 45,000 eggs to families, the elderly, individuals, and migrant workers in need across the island.

Leroy Seow, Head of Products, Retail Business, FairPrice Group, emphasised the importance of eggs in Singaporeans’ daily lives: “Eggs are a staple in most local diets, found in everything from soft boiled eggs for breakfast to egg fried rice for dinner. They are an affordable and accessible source of protein and nutrients. We are grateful for our partnerships with local, regional, and global suppliers that enable FPG to meet the demand for this essential food item, and fulfil our social mission of keeping daily essentials within reach for all.”

FPG offers more than 60 options of eggs from more than 10 countries to consumers, the latest additions to this list coming from Brunei and Turkey in 2023. It was the first retailer in Singapore to import eggs from these countries.

Earlier this month, FPG brought back its popular Save Every Day Campaign, a discount programme to provide customers with over $2,0004 worth of savings through more than 400 unique vouchers on the FPG App. This was the latest in a wave of programmes announced since the start of the year to help Singaporeans keep daily essentials within reach, including the absorption of the one per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) hike on 500 staple items till the end of June 2024, an $8 FairPrice Return Voucher promotion in conjunction with the government’s first tranche of CDC vouchers, and May Day NTUC union member deals.5
