SINGAPORE, 22 April 2020 – NTUC FairPrice (FairPrice) today announced an expansion of its Halal product range to better cater to its Muslim customers. This move sees the number of Halal-certified products increase by more than 700 products from the existing 5,000 Halal-certified products available last year. To mark the extensive expansion of its range of Halal products and to commemorate the upcoming period of Ramadan, a holy month of fasting and reflection for Muslims, FairPrice will also be donating $20,000 to Yayasan Mendaki.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, Group CEO, FairPrice Group, said, “As the current Covid-19 situation continues to disrupt our way of life, upholding our cultures and traditions becomes ever more important to ensure we stand strong as a multi-racial, multi-cultural society. Ramadan is an important occasion for Muslims, and we commemorate this significant event with a donation to Yayasan Mendaki, along with a renewed commitment to better cater to our Muslim community. With our latest expansion of products, FairPrice stores now offer more than 5,700 Halal-certified products, providing our Muslim customers with greater choice and variety for their grocery needs. We will continue to grow this range to better serve our customers.”

The newly expanded range will see the introduction of new brands such as Good Virtues Co., Asyura and Pondok Abang among others, as well as the expansion of existing brands to offer a wider variety of choices for customers. Among the Halal-certified range, over 400 are FairPrice housebrand products. The Halal-certified products are sourced from various countries including Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Thailand, USA and Vietnam.

Donation to Yayasan Mendaki to support children from low-income families
FairPrice Foundation’s donation of S$20,000 to Yayasan Mendaki will help support low-income families in the Muslim community through awarding bursaries, subsidies from school fees and other academic programme initiatives. Last year, FairPrice Foundation had also donated $20,000 to Yayasan Mendaki.

Mdm Zuraidah Abdullah, CEO of Yayasan Mendaki, said, “NTUC FairPrice has been one of our strongest supporters contributing significantly to our efforts in uplifting the Malay/Muslim community towards success through education. Their donation of $20,000 to the Education Trust Fund (ETF) ensures that every recipient of the ETF receives the assistance needed to achieve academic excellence. Mendaki and the community are appreciative of the generous contribution, especially during this challenging period.”

Free dates and beverages distributed to Muslim customers to break fast
From 24 April to 23 May 2020, FairPrice will also be offering free dates, snacks and beverages to all Muslim customers daily, half-an-hour before and after the time of breaking fast across 58 stores, island-wide. This initiative, which has been ongoing since 2009, has been further expanded to 58 stores island-wide, up from 40 stores last year. Dates will be pre-packed into individual bags for self-collection, which will be facilitated by staff members who will be wearing masks and enforcing social distancing and crowd control measures.

Customers are reminded to adhere to the latest government measures to ensure that everyone can collect their items safely during this period. There will be mandatory temperature taking conducted for customers at stores, with the exception of FairPrice stores within shopping malls. Shoppers with a temperature above 37.5 degrees Celsius will not be granted entry and are advised to seek medical attention. Customers are also reminded to wear a mask and maintain social distancing within queues.
