SINGAPORE, 11 JANUARY 2024 – As part of FairPrice Group’s (FPG) latest efforts to deepen community bonds through seasonal celebrations, FairPrice Foundation (FPF) held two Chinese New Year (CNY) block parties today in the Tampines and Redhill neighbourhoods.
More than 400 residents turned up for the block parties, where goodie bags filled with essentials such as coffee, kaya spread, cream crackers, FairPrice vouchers, and tissues and wet wipes for spring cleaning were distributed to lower income residents in the neighbourhood. In an effort to improve vulnerable Singaporeans’ access to one of the most popular and affordable sources of fresh protein this festive season, FPF also distributed trays of fresh eggs to 120 families in need at the Tampines block party.
This distribution of eggs is FPF’s most recent initiative informed by its research study1 conducted in 2024 that revealed fresh protein to be the top preference for beneficiaries of food donation programmes. The study explored Singaporeans’ changing food habits, needs, and preferences, and expanded on opportunities for FPG to more meaningfully serve the communities in which it operates, through everything food.
Jean Khong, General Manager, FairPrice Foundation, said: “Chinese New Year is that special time of the year where many Singaporeans gather around the dining table to celebrate love and friendship between family and friends. Through our block parties where we distribute daily essentials such as eggs to the most vulnerable among us, we hope to provide all in our community with the festive essentials they need for a happy, healthy, and enjoyable new year celebration.”
Other activities of the day included lion dance performances, festive food and drink sampling of FPG’s latest seasonal products including Yu Sheng and Bak Kwa chips, and CNY-themed games. Unity pharmacists were also on hand to provide complementary health check ups and advice to party-goers.
The CNY block parties are the latest in FPG’s series of initiatives to celebrate SG60 together with Singaporeans by deepening community bonds, and keeping essentials within reach for families this festive season.
The block parties follow FPG’s announced price freeze on popular CNY seafood, vegetable, and pork produce; the launch of its S$6 Return Vouchers programme to supplement the government’s CDC Vouchers Scheme; the Group’s doubling of Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) Blue and Orange cardholder daily discounts on Thursdays and Fridays respectively from three to six per cent for the first 60 days of 2025; and its extension of daily discount schemes for Seniors, Merdeka and Pioneer Generation individuals, and CHAS Blue and Orange cardholders through to end-2025.
In addition to the CNY activities and festive giving, the parties at Tampines and Redhill also featured educational booths adapted from FPG’s Neighbourhood Food Share initiative, and FPF’s signature preschool nutrition and sustainability education programme, Start Strong, Stay Strong. Through these booths, FPF engaged residents with informative games that explained how anyone can make healthier food choices during the festive season.
The Chinese New Year block parties were FPG’s first for 2025, and the initiative will continue to run for major festive occasions throughout the year, including Hari Raya, May Day, National Day, Deepavali, and Christmas.
