SINGAPORE, 25 March 2025 – In a first-of-its-kind effort to keep daily essentials within reach for those in need, FairPrice Foundation (FPF) and FairPrice Group (FPG) announced today the Protein Pledge: a commitment to distribute S$1 million worth of fresh protein in the form of fresh eggs to vulnerable communities across the island by 2030. Over the next five years, FPF will collaborate with charity and community partners across Singapore to ensure that distributions reach the beneficiaries who need them most.
The Protein Pledge is part of FPF’s wider commitment to help ensure food security for the poor and needy, and is anchored by findings from A Full Plate1, FPG’s recent study on the changing food habits, preferences, and challenges of Singaporeans today. In the report, low-income respondents indicated a preference to receive protein over processed or canned foods, that are more commonly distributed through food donation programmes.
Vipul Chawla, Group CEO, FairPrice Group and Board Member, FairPrice Foundation shared that FPF is laser focused on finding fresh ways to improve access to and understanding of nutrition in Singapore, especially for the vulnerable.
“Through the Protein Pledge, we want to help bridge the food and nutrition gap for those in need by improving their access to fresh protein, a critical part of any healthy diet. Our focus at FPF is on finding relevant ways to make every day a little better for the underprivileged, by providing them with the essentials they need to lead more fulfilling lives.”
To date, 18 of FPF’s charity and community partners, including the Lions Befrienders, Children’s Aid Society, Migrant Workers’ Centre, and M3, have opted into the Protein Pledge for 2025. Throughout the year, FPF will distribute fresh eggs regularly to over 46,000 of their beneficiaries. The Protein Pledge initiative builds upon FPF’s signature programmes aimed at supporting food security for the poor and needy, strengthening community bonds, and improving worker welfare.
Earlier initiatives launched throughout the past year include:
- An egg distribution in June 2024 which provided 45,000 eggs to underprivileged families, elderly and migrant workers in Singapore
- Distribution of 12,000 nutritious breakfast bundles to Primary 6 students through the Cheers Breakfast Club
- Launch of Start Strong, Stay Strong, Singapore’s first preschool sustainability and nutrition education program
- Collaboration with FPG on A Full Plate, Singapore’s largest food donation drive
- Sponsorship of doubled daily discounts for CHAS Blue and Orange cardholders for the first 60 days of 2025, in celebration of SG60
Organisations serving vulnerable communities are encouraged to visit go.fpg.sg/protein-pledge to learn more about the Protein Pledge, and to apply to participate in the programme.
