SINGAPORE, 20 JANUARY 2024 – FairPrice Group (FPG) fired up Chinese New Year celebrations by pledging $80,000 to seniors in need through its philanthropic arm FairPrice Foundation. FPG also hosted two Chinese New Year (CNY) block parties today in heartland neighbourhoods at Saint George’s Lane and Toa Payoh. Residents got a chance to bond through festive games, calligraphy, food and opportunities to contribute to efforts that supported the vulnerable in the community.
In tandem with the CNY block parties, FPG launched its ‘Festive Care Pack’ initiative, aimed at providing care packs to 4,000 senior beneficiaries through 10 charitable organisations this CNY. Party-goers were given the opportunity to purchase festive care packs that contained daily essentials such as tea, cereal drinks, assorted biscuits, and mandarin oranges, and write a blessing and note of encouragement to seniors across Singapore who were spending Chinese New Year alone or in old folks homes. Those who purchased festive care packs also received handwritten calligraphy couplets as tokens of appreciation.
This Chinese New Year, FPG is also pledging to commit volunteer hours to pack and distribute the festive care packs to the elderly, through its corporate volunteering programme. Charitable organisations that will benefit from the ‘Festive Care Pack’ initiative include NTUC Health Nursing Homes, TOUCH Community Services, Allkin Singapore, and Ren Ci Nursing Home @ Ang Mo Kio, among others. If successful, the initiative will be extended to other celebrations across the year.
Mr Vipul Chawla, Group CEO, FairPrice Group said, “Chinese New Year holds great significance for our customers and Singaporeans as a whole, and we were delighted for the opportunity to commemorate this festive occasion with them. Today’s block party, coupled with FairPrice Foundation’s commitment of $80,000 to support seniors through the ‘Festive Care Pack’ initiative, represents our dedication to fulfilling our social mission. Our goal is to rally the community and support the vulnerable this season.”
Two hundred goody bags filled with festive goodies and daily essentials to usher in the Chinese New Year festivities were also distributed to lower-income residents in St Georges and Toa Payoh. Through its pharmacy chain Unity, FPG also provided free health screenings to attendees to encourage residents to be mindful of their wellbeing this CNY.
The FairPrice on Wheels truck was also on site to offer over 200 best-value products to attendees alongside other limited time promotions, including a free recycling bag gift with purchases1.
The parties featured educational activations for the FairPrice Group Community Fridge Restock Initiative, a programme to provide residents across Singapore’s heartlands with free rescued fruits and vegetables through 15 community fridges.
The block parties also featured lion dance performances, family-friendly games, and food stations where attendees got to sample offerings from FPG’s line of ready-to-heat meals Home Flavours, and partners such as SUPER coffee, Marigold HL Milk, and BoBo fish balls.
The CNY block parties were FPG’s first for 2024, and the latest in a series that kicked off during National Day 2023 that has brought festive cheer and celebration to eight heartland neighbourhoods across Singapore. They will be followed by more initiatives to engage and support the community throughout CNY.
Since the start of this year, FPG has also announced a wave of programmes to help Singaporeans cope with rising costs and keep daily essentials within reach. These include the absorption of the one per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) hike on 500 staple items till June 2024, the $8 FairPrice Return Voucher promotion, and a price freeze on popular seafood and exclusive promotions for vegetables ahead of CNY.
