SINGAPORE, 30 AUGUST 2024 – FairPrice Group (FPG) announced today the opening of its most sustainable supermarket at City Square Mall. The 24,000 square foot space – approximately the size of 16 five-room HDB flats – has a lower carbon footprint compared to the average FairPrice supermarket, along with a wide range of Group-first sustainability features that make it FPG’s flagship for environmentally conscious store design. FairPrice City Square Mall marks a milestone on FPG’s decarbonisation roadmap and its journey to supporting the nation’s sustainability agenda. The overhauled outlet was first opened in September 2009.

Vipul Chawla, Group CEO, FairPrice Group, said: “Our customers are increasingly conscious of their carbon footprint, the importance of sustainable food sources and supporting our local producers. Our sustainability targets reflect our position as Singapore’s largest retailer. This opening of our most sustainable supermarket represents our stride towards a greener future and will serve as a benchmark for how we incorporate care for the environment into our growth and expansion in the years to come while ensuring daily essentials remain within reach for all in Singapore.”

Sustainable Store Design

The City Square Mall outlet’s sustainable design – from cooling systems, lighting, to general fixtures – facilitate a shopping environment that is both better for the planet, and customers. Store fridges use carbon-dioxide (CO2) refrigerants for cooling, an eco-friendly alternative to the more traditional fluorocarbon refrigerants, that has significantly lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. All in-store lighting is LED, consuming half the amount of energy compared to conventional fluorescent lighting.

The outlet also features sustainably produced fittings, including server counter worktops, dining table tops, seats, and other carpentry fixtures, made from recycled or sustainably produced natural materials. Its shopping carts and trolleys are also made with recycled plastics.

These fixtures are a first for FairPrice Supermarkets, and if viable and well-received by customers, these environmental friendly solutions could be implemented across FairPrice’s outlets as part of its ongoing refurbishment and upgrading programme.

Sustainability Features and fresher produce for Customers

Through FairPrice City Square Mall’s extensive array of sustainable products, FPG aims to empower customers to make environmentally and socially conscious choices when grocery shopping. The outlet features more than 400 sustainable products, from responsibly made household staples like dishwashing liquid and paper products to a wide variety of products with reduced packaging.

To offer customers fresher and more locally grown vegetables and produce, the freshly refurbished store features over 150 locally-farmed fresh items. This includes the widest range of local fresh produce delivered within 24 hours from farm-to-store, such as spinach, lettuce, eggs and fish, ensuring uncompromised freshness and quality. To reduce single use packaging, the store also offers shoppers the option to refill bottles of household cleaning liquids instead of purchasing new ones, through its Bio-home Household Cleaning Liquids Refillable Station.

Eco-friendly package labelling, sustainability tips in the form of stickers across the store, and educational reuse and recycling stations, such as the Community Bag Rack and Alba e-waste recycling bin are part of FPG’s efforts to engage Singaporeans more meaningfully through sustainability education.

This outlet is also the only supermarket in Singapore designed with in-store education to empower consumers in making everyday sustainable choices, in partnership with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Singapore as FairPrice City Square Mall’s Sustainability Knowledge Partner.

Sustainable Operations

The City Square Mall outlet is a zero food waste store where customers are encouraged to segregate their food waste on-site that will be treated using the mall’s food digester. Blemished produce such as fresh fruits and vegetables, will be sold at discounted prices through FPG’s IMperfect Fellas programme or donated to the vulnerable through its Neighbourhood Food Share Initiative. Potential food waste gets processed through City Square Mall’s food digester, diverting it away from Singapore’s landfills.
