NTUC FairPrice to cease collection of NRIC details for membership verification in accordance to PDPA guidelines

From August, NRIC details will no longer be accepted at FairPrice stores for membership privileges and benefits – customers need to flash their Plus! cards instead

SINGAPORE, 17 July 2019 – NTUC FairPrice (FairPrice) today announced that it will discontinue the acceptance of National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) for membership verification. This is in compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) and will be rolled out in phases across all FairPrice stores, including FairPrice Finest supermarkets, FairPrice Shop stores, FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets, FairPrice Xpress outlets, Cheers convenience stores, Unity pharmacies, Warehouse Club, and FairPrice On, from August 2019 onwards.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO, NTUC FairPrice, said: “NTUC FairPrice adopts strict processes to safeguard our customers’ privacy and personal data. We support the latest enhancement to the PDPA to discontinue the use of NRICs for membership verification purposes, and will implement this change in our operational processes ahead of the stipulated deadline. Customers and members can continue to enjoy their privileges by using their Plus! membership card instead.”

There are currently more than 2.1 million NTUC Plus! and Plus! members who enjoy various membership benefits when they shop at FairPrice, such as earning LinkPoints and enjoying periodic members’ discounts for their purchases. FairPrice shareholders, which number over 745,000, are also able to earn rebates. Last year, close to S$54 million in rebates were distributed to FairPrice members and S$30.3 million worth of LinkPoints were disbursed.

With the non-acceptance of NRIC procedures in place, FairPrice members, NTUC Plus! members and Plus! members need only flash their Plus! cards to enjoy their membership benefits. The “red and white” FairPrice membership card will no longer be accepted after 31 July 2019. For online purchases on FairPrice On, members need to update their online accounts by the end of the month with their Plus! card number to receive the membership benefits.

There are, however, specific circumstances where it will still be necessary for customers to furnish their NRIC details. Such instances include ensuring customers meet the minimum legal age for purchasing restricted products such as alcohol and cigarettes. In these instances, cashiers will only use the NRIC details to verify the customers’ age.

NTUC Plus! and Plus! members who have misplaced their membership cards may contact +65 6223 5225 or [email protected] for assistance.

FairPrice members who have not received their Plus! card or have yet to link their Plus! card to their FairPrice membership can contact the FairPrice membership hotline at +65 6888 1880 or [email protected] for assistance.
